On the morning after Donald Trump was elected to be this nation’s 45th president, Brad Smith, the president and chief legal officer of Microsoft Corp., sat down to write a blog about it.

Ninety minutes later, the Wisconsin-bred tech executive had outlined four key issues for the United States and the information technology arena: Many voters feel left out and left behind; there’s an opportunity to invest in infrastructure; diversity is important; and so is striking a balance between protecting privacy and public safety.

The blog — which for the record congratulated Trump and his running mate, Mike Pence, on their win — was a response to Microsoft’s millennial employees, in particular, who were “intensely interested” in the company’s views on the election results, Smith said during an interview before several public appearances in Milwaukee this past week.
