Wisconsin, the state that is at the bottom of the barrel for new business creation, ranks second among the 25 largest states for small business activity, according to a new report released Thursday.

The Kauffman Index of Main Street Entrepreneurship found that more than half of the businesses started in Wisconsin survive their first five years. There’s also a relatively high rate — 6.5% — of adults in the state who own a business for their main job.

And the state has a high density of local, established small businesses, those that have less than 50 employees and are at least five years old. Kauffman found that 704 of every 1,000 Wisconsin firms fit that bill. Read the full story here.
