WEA Trust has bought the Health Tradition Health Plan from Mayo Clinic Health System in what will be WEA Trust’s first entry into the market for health insurance sold to private employers.

Health Tradition, which insures about 7,000 people in southwestern and western Wisconsin, had planned to close.

The acquisition marks another step by WEA Trust, based in Madison, to broaden its market.

The health insurer, which once focused on selling health insurance to school districts, now also sells health plans for state, county and municipal workers.

WEA Trust once covered roughly a third of the state’s teachers. But Act 10 — the state legislation that restricted the bargaining power of many public employees — led to more school districts switching health plans.
