MILWAUKEE – Nine research projects from Wisconsin’s private colleges or the UW System will present during the inaugural “First Look Forum” Tuesday, June 10, at the Wisconsin Entrepreneur’s Conference in Milwaukee.

The First Look Forum designed to offer investors a “sneak preview” of university-based innovations that may form the basis of start-up companies or be commercialized through other means. This forum will offer researchers a chance to present to a business-focused audience and to connect with potential investors and other experts early in the commercialization process for advice and feedback. Selected to present during the 10 a.m. to noon forum were:
- Shi-Jiang Li, Medical College of Wisconsin (early detection technology for Alzheimer’s disease).
- David P. Klemer, UW-Milwaukee (biosensing for in vitro diagnostics).
- Yi-Qiang (Eric) Cheng, UW-Milwaukee (discovery and evaluation of anti-cancer compounds).
- Jay and Maureen Neitz, Medical College of Wisconsin (systems for preventing nearsightedness and testing to predict nearsightedness).
- Michael A. Pickart, UW-Stout (domain mapping functional genomics in support of personalized medicine).
- Aoy Tomita-Mitchell, Sujana Ghanta and Michael E. Mitchell, Medical College of Wisconsin and Children’s Hospital of Wisconsin (non-invasive fetal diagnostic test for chromosomal abnormalities).
- Sheikh Iqbal Ahamed, Salman Gill and Ryan Ozechowski, Marquette University (home monitoring using pervasive computing technologies).
- Steve McAvoy, Medical College of Wisconsin (elliptical balloon dilator for cervical dilation during labor).
- Paul Roebber, UW-Milwaukee (service-intensive weather forecast support).
The First Look Forum at the Entrepreneurs’ Conference in Milwaukee is patterned after forums run by the UW-Madison Office of Corporate Relations, with support from a grant from the Ewing Marion Kauffman Foundation. One such forum involving UW-Madison research was held in November at the Wisconsin Early Stage Symposium.
Accredited investors are encouraged to attend, but the First Look Forum is open to others who attend the full conference.
The Entrepreneurs’ Conference is produced by the Wisconsin Technology Council, the independent, non-profit science and technology advisers to the Governor and the Legislature. It serves as a catalyst for the growth of Wisconsin’s tech-based and entrepreneurial economy.
