Four Milwaukee-area startups in the life sciences, insurance technology and advanced manufacturing industries pitched their products during the 15th Governor’s Business Plan Contest in Madison on Tuesday.

The contest took place on the campus of the University of Wisconsin-Madison as part of the annual Wisconsin Entrepreneurs’ Conference.

The four Milwaukee-area startups were:

  • Swirl Insurance Services: The Mequon company created a digital platform that leverages the data on mortgage loans and renter’s applications to deliver quotes within seconds.
  • Shockray Self-Defense: The Oak Creek startup developed a combination of a pepper-spray pistol and electrical stun-gun weapon.
  • ReNeuroGen: This Elm Grove company developed a drug that is used to mitigate the aftermath of a stroke and eliminate significant brain damage.
  • AquaMetals: Based at the Milwaukee County Research Park’s Technology Innovation Center in Wauwatosa, this company designs and manufactures analytical measurement systems for the monitoring of dissolved toxic heavy metals in industrial wastewater.
