WARF’s plans for working with startups topic at March 19 WIN-Madison meeting
March 19, 2013 @ 11:30 am - 1:30 pm
The UW-Madison is one of the nation’s five largest research universities in terms of total dollars spent on R&D, but the number of startup companies spun off each year from the university campus is sometimes criticized as being relatively low.
Hear from leaders of the Wisconsin Alumni Research Foundation on WARF’s strategies for working more directly with startups on and off campus at the Tuesday, March 19 meeting of the WIN-Madison chapter.
The luncheon will be held at the Sheraton Hotel on Madison’s John Nolen Drive. Registration and networking begin at 11:30 a.m., lunch at noon and the presentation at 12:30 p.m. The cost is $25 for WIN members, $35 for non-members and included with WIN corporate memberships. Register at www.wisconsintechnologycouncil.com/events
Panelists will include Carl Gulbrandsen, managing director of WARF; Leigh Cagan, chief technology commercialization officer; Michael Falk, general counsel; and Carrie Thome, director of investments. Provost Paul DeLuca will discuss the larger campus role. Tom Still of the Tech Council will moderate.
The WARF team and DeLuca will outline its latest strategies, including some already under way, to support startups with ties to the campus and beyond. Those include the “Discovery to Product” initiative, the Law and Entrepreneurship Clinic and programming through the Wisconsin Institutes for Discovery town center. WARF’s interests in investing directly in young companies will also be addressed.
The luncheon is sponsored by the Greater Madison Convention & Visitors Bureau.
