Convenience-store operator Kwik Trip Inc. plans to spend $300 million to expand and upgrade its operations in La Crosse, an effort expected to create more than 300 jobs over the next five years, Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker announced Wednesday.

The company will receive up to $21 million in state income tax credits in exchange for the investment. The final amount in credits, authorized by the Wisconsin Economic Development Corp., will depend on how much Kwik Trip invests in its facilities, the number of jobs created and on how much the company spends buying goods and services from state companies.

More than a third of the planned investment will go to build and equip a new, 200,000-square-foot bread and bun production plant.
