Early stage companies in Wisconsin and beyond will learn how to increase their chance of receiving federal grant dollars or research agreements on Sept. 15 during the fifth annual “Resource Rendezvous.”
The conference, produced by the Wisconsin Security Research Consortium, the Wisconsin Technology Council and the UW-Milwaukee, will be held 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 15, at the Crowne Plaza Hotel, 10499 Innovation Drive, Wauwatosa.

Gregory Milman, director of the Office for Innovation and Special Programs in the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, will conduct a workshop on how to write winning federal grant proposals. Milman manages the $100-million small business program within NIAID and is acclaimed for his advice on National Institutes of Health grant preparation and research funding.
Milman will share personal insight on the secrets of the $700-million NIH Small Business Innovation Research and Small Business Technology Transfer programs. He will illustrate strategies for producing winning proposals, tips on reviewing NIH criteria and offer advice on writing overall better proposals. He will also explain how to attract and retain the attention of grant reviewers.
Other conference speakers will represents the Department of Homeland Security, the National Security Agency, the National Aeronautics and Space Administration, the U.S. Marine Corps, the National Institute of Standards and Technology, and In-Q-Tel, an investment firm focused on intelligence opportunities.
The Resource Rendezvous will also feature early stage companies presenting to key people in federal agencies during the Elevator Pitch presentations. The deadline to submit an application for the Elevator Pitch presentations has been extended until Monday, Aug. 28. Additionally, attendees will have opportunities to learn about the research and development interests and related funding opportunities of participating agencies. Contact Jodi Hoeser for information.
Selected presenters will give a three-minute pitch to showcase their research and product development ideas to federal science and technology directors who will attend Resource Rendezvous. Participants will have only three minutes and up to four PowerPoint slides to share information; there will be ample networking time before and after formal presentations.
“Presenters at past Resource Rendezvous events have established enduring connections with federal science and technology directors, and in many cases have won contracts and grants,” said Jack Heinemann, director of the Wisconsin Security Research Consortium.

For many firms, participation in the conference has led to growth and new revenues. Companies selected to present will have many opportunities to interest science and technology managers from federal agencies. Companies will also receive space in our exhibit area.
