Understory Inc., a Madison tech company that analyzes and processes weather data using sensors, has secured $6.5 million in equity funding, according to a filing with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission.

Eight investors participated in the latest round of funding. The total offered amount in the round was $8.1 million, according to the filing.

Messages left for the company were not immediately returned.

It’s been a busy year for Understory, which uses its data to detect insurance risks, forecast response and help guide utility and agricultural companies on decision making. In June the startup launched its Weather Intelligence Storm Estimates product, which auto-generates insurance assessments after hail events. A month later, the company was awarded a patent for its method of manufacturing its weather stations.

In August, the company announced partnerships with the University of Massachusetts Amherst and Colorado State University through the Center for Collaborative Adaptive Sensing of the Atmosphere for a pilot program developing weather warning systems in Texas. Read the full story here.
