Downtown Milwaukee was a likely frontrunner for Foxconn Technology Group’s planned Wisconsin headquarters and innovation center after the company settled to the south in Mount Pleasant, but it wasn’t always a sure-win for the city.

Foxconn on Tuesday announced plans to buy a downtown building at 611 E. Wisconsin Ave. from Northwestern Mutual. The company began looking downtown in July or August last year, after it had selected Wisconsin for its LCD screen manufacturing plant, codenamed “Flying Eagle,” said Alan Yeung, Foxconn’s head of U.S. strategic initiatives.
