A Brookings Institution report lists Madison as No. 47 among 359 U.S. metropolitan areas in its number of patents per year, between 2007 and 2011. Milwaukee is No. 28. The figures are “not that surprising,” said Tom Still, president of the Wisconsin Technology Council.

 

“One of the things that is evident about the Milwaukee area is that industry there tends to drive innovation” while the academic institutions participate at a lower level, he said.
