A report that concluded the Madison area is at “a critical turning point” and its economic success can no longer be taken for granted will be discussed at the Tuesday, Nov. 22, meeting of the Wisconsin Innovation Network in Madison.
The luncheon will be held at the Sheraton Hotel on Madison’s John Nolen Drive. Registration and networking begin at 11:30 a.m., lunch at noon and the presentation at 12:30 p.m. The cost is $25 for WIN members, $35 for non-members and included with WIN corporate memberships.
A panel of experts will discuss the findings of a 184-page report that is driving the Thrive region’s “Advance Now” process for planning the region’s economic growth. Speakers will include Jenn Post Tyler, the interim vice president for the eight-county Thrive region; Carl Gulbrandsen, managing director of the Wisconsin Alumni Research Foundation; and Dennis Winters, chief labor economist for the Wisconsin Department of Workforce Development.
The report compared the eight-county Madison region with Austin, Texas; Des Moines, Iowa; and Lincoln, Neb. It concludes the areas comes up short in terms of population growth, cost of living, health care costs, rural broadband access and access to capital, but has strengths in a strong talent base, high quality of life, health care availability and significant research and development assets.
The meeting is sponsored by TEAM Companies, which operates one of its data centers in Fitchburg.
WIN is the membership arm of the Tech Council, the independent, non-profit science and technology adviser to the governor and the Legislature. It has chapters in Milwaukee, Madison, Northeast Wisconsin, Central Wisconsin, the Lake Superior region and Western Wisconsin.
