Open air is getting crowded. Signals streaming back and forth from smart devices stretch existing fourth-generation wireless networks almost to their limits.

And as demands on these systems keep increasing, several major research projects led by University of Wisconsin-Madison engineers aim to open new frontiers in cutting-edge wireless communications. The efforts are part of a far-reaching new National Science Foundation (NSF) initiative, announced July 15, 2016, to develop the next generation of wireless technologies.
