Time is running out for Wisconsin farmers to apply to grow industrial hemp.
On Tuesday,Hemp-link the Wisconsin Technology Council hosted a luncheon in Madison to give out information about licensing rules, inspections and uses of industrial hemp.
The director of the hemp program said they’re working to increase their efficiency with crop inspections.
“This past season growers inform us now 30 days prior to harvest when they’ll be harvesting,” said Brian Kuhn from the Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection. “We get out there, get our staff collecting that sample and we’re returning those results within a couple of days of collection.”
There are already more than 1500 applicants for 2019 licenses.
Last year, only about 240 growers received licenses. Officials are preparing to issue hundreds more this year.
