The top executive of Brookfield-based financial technology firm Fiserv Inc. received a sizeable increase in his overall compensation in 2021 — his first full calendar year as CEO of the company — but earned less last year than his predecessor did in the year prior.

Fiserv president and CEO Frank Bisignano had total compensation of $20.4 million in 2021, up from $12.2 million in 2020, according to the proxy statement Fiserv (Nasdaq: FISV) filed Tuesday. He became Fiserv CEO in July 2020.

Bisignano joined Fiserv in 2019 as its president and chief operating officer following Fiserv’s $22 billion acquisition of First Data, the New York company of which Bisignano had been CEO and chairman. That year, his total compensation was $40.3 million, including the value of a large stock award.
