Nurses and other health care workers are concerned about the future of Ascension St. Francis Hospital on Milwaukee’s south side as units close and the number of employees dwindles.

Late last month, the hospital closed its labor and delivery unit, the only hospital unit that delivered babies on Milwaukee’s south side. But hospital workers say that in recent years, the hospital has scaled back other services and dramatically reduced hospital beds.

Hospital workers and union members went before a committee of the Milwaukee Common Council last week to voice their concerns about what they see as a gradual “disinvestment” from a community hospital in the middle of a predominantly Hispanic part of the city.
