Aurora Health Care and Froedtert Health have turned to the gig economy as one strategy for addressing a shortage of nurses that has persisted beyond the pandemic.

Retaining nurses via an app is less expensive than contracting travel nurses through outside employment agencies, which hospitals relied on as health system-employed nurses fled the field during Covid-19 surges, executives said.

Both Froedtert and Aurora are using CareRev, an app that connects health care facilities to per-diem health care professionals. CareRev’s website said the Los Angeles-based company is “a modern marketplace platform offering healthcare professionals the freedom to choose how and when they work.”
