Microsoft Corp. took another step toward actual construction for its data center in Mount Pleasant, gaining local approvals Monday for a site plan with more than 1.1 million square feet of buildings.

Since announcing the more than $1 billion data center in March, the high-profile tech company has worked through village approvals for financing incentives, the late summer start of earth moving, and now its building foundations and footings. Efforts are also underway to secure contractors for the project, including lead builder Walsh Construction of Chicago.

The project is expected for completion in 2026, with a start of operations at the data center later this year.
