Microsoft Corp. gained another needed approval toward a possible October construction start for its data center in Mount Pleasant, which the company said will support the state’s information technology industry.

“The project is needed to address expanding customer demand for these services in the region as teleworking capacities, cloud-based storage and operating platforms, gaming, and contactless living behaviors have increased in recent years,” according to a recent Microsoft filing with the state. “Because these projects usually take 18-24 months to design and construct, Microsoft is planning now for future growth.”

Pending final needed approvals, site grading could start in October for the $1 billion data center located at Highway KR and 90th Street in Mount Pleasant. It would be complete in August 2027, according to Microsoft’s filings with the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources.
