Microsoft Corp. will invest $3.3 billion between now and the end of 2026 to expand its Mount Pleasant data center campus in a project that could eventually create 2,000 permanent jobs around artificial intelligence, according to Wednesday announcements from the company and the White House.

The investments are “designed to strengthen the role of southeast Wisconsin as a hub for AI-powered economic activity, innovation and job creation,” Microsoft said.

Among multiple major announcements Wednesday, Microsoft disclosed plans for a new AI co-innovation lab on the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee campus that would connect local manufacturers with Microsoft AI experts and developers, as well as multiple workforce development initiatives to train residents for jobs in AI, data and other information technology roles.
