Exact Sciences, a cancer screening and diagnostics company widely known for its Cologuard test, has announced a $350 million expansion in Madison that could create more than 1,300 jobs.

Hiring will take place in research and product development, laboratory work, patient support, engineering, finance, human resources and other areas.

Exact Sciences says it could have expanded at its locations in Arizona, California, Utah and Massachusetts. But the company chose Madison, where it’s based, even as employers in the area have faced hiring challenges.

“This is a city in a region that people want to move to because it has such a high quality of life,” Exact Sciences Chairman and CEO Kevin Conroy said in a Milwaukee Journal Sentinel interview.

The expansion will create more than 500 new jobs at the company’s laboratories on Madison’s southwest side, 215 positions in research and development, 115 in patient support, and 530 in other categories.
