Oshkosh Defense is gearing up to make a run at a $5 billion contract to build the U.S. Army’s next generation of heavy-duty tactical trucks.

The company, a subsidary of Oshkosh Corp., is one of four companies recently selected to deliver protoype trucks for evaluation later this year.

What’s the government looking for in this contract?

The initial contract is a small (by Oshkosh Defense standards) agreement to develop prototypes for the next generation of heavy-duty military transport trucks, known as Common Tactical Trucks, or CTTs. The military wants the new versions of its trucks to employ updated technology and be more standardized to minimize differences in maintenance and operations.
