Dear Wisconsin Business Leader:

Earlier this month NorthStar Analytics released a report detailing the University of Wisconsin–Madison’s economic impact in the State of Wisconsin. I’m writing today to share the good news. What many in Wisconsin already know, but which the study confirms, is that UW–Madison is one of the state’s leading economic engines, and vital to creating a prosperous future for our state.

The research conducted here, the students we educate, the companies we help launch and the talent we attract – that impact is felt in every county across the state. And it’s felt primarily in the private sector.

The full 2021 Economic Impact Report can be found online, but here are a few key findings:

  • UW–Madison, its affiliate organizations and the discoveries coming out of the university have a total $30.8 billion statewide economic impact, equivalent to nearly 9% of Wisconsin’s $345 billion economy.
  • UW–Madison is one of Wisconsin’s major job creators, responsible for over 232,000 public and private sector jobs. That’s 1 out of every 13 jobs in the state.
  • For every $1 of taxpayer investment in the university, $26 is returned to the Wisconsin economy making UW–Madison a solid investment.

Simply put, a strong UW–Madison supports a strong Wisconsin economy.

Together with industry partners like you, the UW–Madison can keep Wisconsin moving forward. Learn more about how we can support your talent solutions, sponsored research and professional development needs by contacting the Office of Business Engagement.
